At age 82, Wally Funk Mercury 13 astronaut candidate became the oldest person to fly into space aboard Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket.
Along with millionaire Amazon entrepreneur Jeff Bezos, his brother Mark, and an 18-year-old student, the 82-year-old was launched into space.
Ms Funk, who has spent the previous six decades striving to reach space, said, “I didn’t think I’d ever get to go up.”
She studied to be an astronaut in the 1960s but was passed over for a space mission due to her gender.
The quartet was sent into space from the Texan desert aboard New Shepard, a rocket created by Mr. Bezos’s company, Blue Origin.
The spaceship reached a height of about 100 kilometres (62 miles) above the Earth’s surface, travelling at nearly three times the speed of sound.
