To win the medal, the Manipur athlete lifted a total weight of 202 kg. China’s Hou Zhihui won the gold medal in the event, with a combined weight total of 210 kg.

Chanu snatched a total of 87 kg in the snatch portion of the competition and finished with a clean and jerk lift of 115 kg. She is the second Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic medal, following Karnam Malleswari.

Chanu had previously won the gold medal in the 48 kg category at the World Championships in Anaheim. In the 48kg event, she is the reigning Commonwealth Games gold medalist.
