Question 5) In which year did India and Pakistan face each other in a World Cup for the first time?
Answer: 1992
Between 1975 until 1987, they were separated into two groups, owing to political differences. However, in 1992, a unique system was implemented in which all participants were required to play each other’s roles. The reason behind this was because, whilst previous editions had eight teams, this time there were nine, which could not be divided into two groups due to South Africa’s departure.
As a result, each team had to face each other, and an India-Pakistan encounter was unavoidable. Having said that, in the finals of 1983 and 1987, we came close to meeting. In 1983, India advanced to the final four, but Pakistan was eliminated in the semi-finals. We both lost in the semi-finals in 1987. Except for the classic rivalry, there was nothing standing in the way of cricket fans.
India elected to bat first and finished with a total of 216/7 in 49 overs. With 54 points, Sachin Tendulkar was the most important player. The match was one-sided since Pakistan was never really in the hunt. Imran Khan’s men were bowled out for 173 runs by Manoj Prabhakar, Javagal Srinath, and Kapil Dev, who took 2-2 wickets.
It was a 43-run win and was pretty convincing. This will set the trend in the coming years.
