This statue shows the famous couple Savitribai and Jyotirao Phule who famously opened a girl’s school in Pune in 1848.
She and her husband, Jyotirao Phule, were instrumental in the advancement of women’s rights in India. She is considered the founder of Indian feminism. In 1848, Phule and her husband established Bhide Wada, one of the first Indian girls’ schools in Pune.
Savitribai was uneducated at the time of her marriage. Savitribai was educated at home by Jyotirao. After Jyotirao completed her basic school, his friends Sakharam Yeshwant Paranjpe and Keshav Shivram Bhavalkar were in charge of her secondary education. In addition, she enrolled in two teacher-training programmes. The first was in Ahmednagar, where an American missionary named Cynthia Farrar ran a school.
