Following an outbreak in the Philippines in September, Malaysia is the second Asian country to report a polio case. Malaysia launched a vaccination campaign in a rural town on Borneo island after a 3-month-old boy was diagnosed with polio, the country’s first case in 27 years.
The Health Ministry confirmed on Sunday that a three-month-old Malaysian boy has been diagnosed with polio, the first case in the country in 27 years.
The three-month-old Malaysian boy from Tuaran, Sabah, was admitted to a hospital’s Intensive Care Unit after developing fever and limb weakness, according to The New Strait Times, citing Health Director-General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
He went on to say that the last polio case in Malaysia occurred in 1992, and that the country was declared polio-free in 2000.
On December 6, this year, the child was confirmed to be infected with vaccine-derived poliovirus Type 1 (VDPV1).
