The Greco-Roman hero Hercules was told by Eurystheus at this place to perform 12 Great Labours. After Hera, who had tried to kill Heracles ever since he was born, induced a madness in him that made him kill his wife and children, Heracles went to the Oracle of Delphi to atone. He prayed to the god Apollo for guidance, and was told to serve the king of Mycenae, Eurystheus, for ten years.
In a fit of madness, Heracles killed his wife Megara. He asked the Oracle of Apollo in Delphi how he could atone. He was told to travel to Tiryns and do the tasks asked of him by King Eurystheus(his cousin through his mortal mother). For twelve years, he traveled all over to complete these incredible tasks.
